NordVPN and ExpressVPN sit 0.1 points apart on this site’s overall rating (8.3 vs 8.2) — close enough that “which is better” isn’t a useful question. Both are independently audited, both are fast, both have real streaming and torrenting support. The differences that actually matter are specific: what you’ll pay after the first year, how many devices you can run, and how deep each provider’s audit track record goes.

Price: ExpressVPN is meaningfully cheaper long-term
Both providers discount hard on signup and renew at a much higher rate — that part’s the same story. What differs is the actual renewal number: NordVPN’s 2-year Basic plan renews at $11.59/month, ExpressVPN’s at $8.33/month. Both jump by roughly the same percentage from their intro price, but ExpressVPN’s steady-state cost is about 28% lower in absolute terms. If you’re planning to keep either subscription past the first term, that gap is the single biggest number in this comparison.
Audit track record: ExpressVPN has published far more, NordVPN’s is newer
ExpressVPN has published 23+ independent third-party audits since 2009 (a partner-facing page rounds this to “27+,” a discrepancy this site’s own ExpressVPN review flags rather than resolves in the company’s favor) — the longest continuous audit history of any provider this site has reviewed. NordVPN’s is on its 6th consecutive engagement, all conducted by Deloitte since 2022. Neither publishes its full technical report without a gate: NordVPN’s requires logging into a Nord Account, ExpressVPN’s (from KPMG) requires accepting KPMG’s own terms and conditions. Volume favors ExpressVPN; both are equally opaque about the full report itself.
Devices, speed, and protocols: split results
ExpressVPN allows 14 simultaneous connections per account against NordVPN’s 10 — a real gap if you’re covering a household or a small team. NordVPN wins on raw speed in independent 2026 testing (817–950+ Mbps, consistently ranked at or near the top of head-to-head tests) against ExpressVPN’s still-competitive but lower 718–898 Mbps range. Both have a purpose-built lightweight protocol (NordWhisper and Lightway respectively) aimed at working on restrictive networks — NordVPN also offers Double VPN and Onion Over VPN specialty servers that ExpressVPN doesn’t have a direct equivalent for.
What we didn’t compare, and why
Streaming and torrenting aren’t a meaningful differentiator here — both reliably unblock Netflix and BBC iPlayer by independent-reviewer consensus, and both support P2P traffic. Neither offers port forwarding to a typical subscriber (NordVPN gates it behind a separate paid add-on; ExpressVPN only supports it through a short list of compatible router firmware, with forwarded ports sitting outside the encrypted tunnel entirely) — a wash, not an advantage either way.
Corporate ownership is worth knowing but doesn’t favor one over the other: NordVPN’s parent, Nord Security, is based in the Netherlands; ExpressVPN has been owned by Kape Technologies, an LSE-listed company controlled by Teddy Sagi, since a nearly $1 billion acquisition in 2021.
