That doesn’t make the comparison pointless; it makes it more interesting. Rather than two companies racing to out-build each other, these look like two deliberately different products built for different buyers under one roof: Surfshark bets on unlimited devices and a cheaper steady-state price, NordVPN bets on a longer audit track record, broader documented streaming support, and faster independent speed results.

Devices and price: Surfshark’s whole pitch
Surfshark allows unlimited simultaneous device connections on every plan — no per-device cap to plan around, a genuine advantage for a household or shared account. NordVPN caps out at 10. Surfshark’s real renewal price ($6.58/month) is also significantly lower than NordVPN’s ($11.59/month) — though worth knowing upfront: Surfshark doesn’t disclose that renewal figure on its own pricing page the way NordVPN does. This site’s own Surfshark review had to confirm the real number through third-party trackers rather than Surfshark’s own site. Cheaper, but less upfront about it.
Audit history and trust: NordVPN has more behind it
NordVPN is on its 6th consecutive Deloitte no-logs engagement; Surfshark is on its 2nd (first in 2023, most recent published mid-2025). Both gate the full technical report behind an account login — neither is more open than the other on that specific point — but NordVPN simply has a longer track record of repeated, consistent engagements. Surfshark also has a real edge worth naming: separate Cure53 infrastructure audits in 2018, 2021, and 2026, most recently reviewing its new Dausos protocol.
Speed and streaming: NordVPN’s documented edge
Independent 2026 speed tests put NordVPN consistently higher (817–950+ Mbps) than Surfshark (650–950 Mbps, with more falloff on long-distance routes). NordVPN’s review also documents broader confirmed streaming access (Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Hulu) against Surfshark’s review, which doesn’t list specific confirmed platforms. That’s a documentation gap as much as a proven weakness, but it’s the honest state of what’s been verified for each.
What we didn’t compare, and why
Torrenting actually favors Surfshark in one specific way: every server supports P2P, so there’s no need to hunt for a specialty location, unlike NordVPN’s recommended-but-not-guaranteed P2P servers. Neither offers real port forwarding to typical subscribers — NordVPN gates it behind a paid add-on, Surfshark doesn’t offer it at all, citing IP-leak risk.
Jurisdiction is a real, if modest, difference: NordVPN operates from Panama (outside the Five/Nine/Fourteen Eyes tiers entirely), while Surfshark is Dutch, and the Netherlands sits inside the Nine Eyes alliance. Neither has a mandatory data-retention law forcing the point, but it’s a real structural difference worth knowing.
