Since 2018 ExpressVPN has published 28 reports from independent auditors, the longest audit history among the VPNs in our reviews. These reports are the strongest available evidence that ExpressVPN keeps to its no-logs policy.

ExpressVPN has three plans: Basic, Advanced and Express Pro. Advanced and Express Pro are a bundle of services, not just a VPN. They include a password manager, tracker blocking and other extras.

The cheapest plan, Basic, renews at $99.95 a year. That is more than most VPNs in our reviews charge.

No-Logs Audit

The most recent audit of ExpressVPN’s no-logs policy was carried out by KPMG LLP, as of February 28, 2025. It was KPMG’s third audit of ExpressVPN.

KPMG audited the TrustedServer system under the ISAE (UK) 3000 Type 1 standard. TrustedServer is ExpressVPN’s server architecture: the servers run only on RAM and are rebuilt from scratch on every boot. KPMG found no issues with the technical safeguards against logging user activity.

Pricing

ExpressVPN has three plans: Basic, Advanced and Express Pro. On a 2-year term, 4 bonus months are added. Basic then costs $2.99 a month ($83.72 for the first 28 months), Advanced $3.99 ($111.72) and Express Pro $5.99 ($167.72).

After the introductory period the subscription renews automatically at a fixed annual price: Basic at $99.95 a year (about $8.33 a month), Advanced at $119.95 a year (about $10 a month), Express Pro at $199.95 a year (about $16.66 a month).

The plans differ in more than the number of devices. Basic includes only lite blocking of ads, malware and adult sites. Advanced adds the ExpressKeys password manager and broader tracker blocking. Express Pro adds a dedicated IP address included in the price and unlimited email aliases.

Advanced and Express Pro also include Identity Defender: removal of your data from data-broker databases and credit monitoring. It works only for US subscribers.

Security & Protocols

Lightway is ExpressVPN’s own protocol, built specifically for a lean, fast connection. ExpressVPN also supports the more common WireGuard and OpenVPN.

The app has a kill switch and split tunneling.

The network blocks domains that the Internet Watch Foundation has flagged as hosting child sexual abuse material. The blocking works across the whole network, regardless of what any individual user does.

Servers & Torrenting

ExpressVPN’s servers are in 113 countries; the company doesn’t publish an exact server count. Torrenting is allowed across the whole network, not only on selected servers.

The VPN apps and servers have no port forwarding feature. Port forwarding is possible only through ExpressVPN’s router firmware, and only on a short list of compatible models. Forwarded ports run outside the encrypted tunnel.

Jurisdiction & Ownership

ExpressVPN is registered in the British Virgin Islands. The islands’ laws don’t require VPN providers to retain user data. The British Virgin Islands are not part of the Five, Nine and Fourteen Eyes alliances, whose member countries share intelligence.

Since September 2021 ExpressVPN has been owned by Kape Technologies, which bought it for nearly $1 billion. Kape Technologies is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is ultimately controlled by Teddy Sagi.
