This link earns us nothing — it points to the provider's own site with no tracking. It's here for the review, not a commission.
Audited by Packetlabs on June 1, 2024 — Most recent of three public audits. Packetlabs audited the FreshScribe server stack (production infrastructure) in June 2024, with a positive outcome. Separately, Leviathan Security Group audited the desktop app (September 2021) and the Android/iOS apps (March 2022) — both also public. An earlier Cure53 audit (Nov-Dec 2022) covered only a pre-production alpha version of FreshScribe, not the system in production today.

Best for: people who want a genuinely usable free tier or flexible pay-for-what-you-need pricing, and don’t mind that the company is based in a Five Eyes country — not for anyone who treats jurisdiction outside the Eyes alliances as a hard requirement.
Pros
- Account signup needs only a username and password — no email address required at all, though confirming one raises the free tier’s data cap
- A real free tier (10GB/month with confirmed email, 11 countries) plus a “Build-A-Plan” option starting at $3/month for exactly the locations you want — unusually flexible pricing
- Unlimited simultaneous device connections on every plan, including free
- Three separate public audits covering both server infrastructure (Packetlabs, 2024) and client apps (Leviathan Security Group, 2021 and 2022)
- Independent 2026 speed tests are excellent — 2,263 Mbps on WireGuard to the nearest server, one of the fastest results recorded in that test, even the free tier ranked in the top four
- Port forwarding available for Pro users, useful for torrenting and self-hosting
- No paid affiliate program since January 2021 — the company deliberately ended paid marketing, so this review carries no tracked referral link
Cons
- Incorporated in Canada, a Five Eyes member — the tightest of the intelligence-sharing tiers, a real jurisdictional factor
- No dedicated obfuscation protocol for heavily-restricted networks — WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2 only
- Free tier does not support torrenting or port forwarding, and drops to 2GB/month if you don’t confirm your email or unsubscribe from marketing emails
- P2P traffic is blocked on some server locations where it’s restricted or illegal, not available fleet-wide
- Canada’s proposed Bill C-22 would require 12 months of connection-data retention if it becomes law — Windscribe has said it will exit the Canadian market rather than comply, which is reassuring as a stated intention but doesn’t resolve the underlying jurisdiction question today
No-Logs Audit & Real-World Test
Windscribe has three public independent audits: Packetlabs examined the FreshScribe server stack (production infrastructure) in June 2024 with a positive result; Leviathan Security Group separately audited the desktop app in September 2021 and the Android/iOS apps in March 2022, both also public. An earlier Cure53 audit from late 2022 covered only a pre-production alpha build of FreshScribe, not the system actually in production.
Beyond formal audits, Windscribe’s no-logs claim got an unplanned real-world test in February 2026, when Dutch authorities reportedly seized a physical server without a warrant. Windscribe’s public response was that its RAM-only server architecture meant investigators would find nothing but “a stock Ubuntu install” — a claim from the company itself, not independently verified by the authorities involved, but a concrete, dated incident rather than a hypothetical.
Pricing
The Pro plan costs $9/month with no discount, or $69/year (~$5.75/month) paid annually — a genuinely low rate for full access. The “Build-A-Plan” option is unusual: $1 per server location per month with a $3 minimum, letting you pay only for the countries you actually need, with each location adding 10GB of bandwidth. The free tier gives 10GB/month (2GB if you don’t confirm your email) across 11 countries, with the same no-logs protections as paid plans, though without torrenting or port forwarding.
Security & Protocols
Windscribe supports WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2, with a kill switch (branded “Firewall” in the app) and split tunneling to exclude specific apps from the VPN. R.O.B.E.R.T. is Windscribe’s custom domain-blocking tool, letting you build your own blocklists for ads, trackers, and malware. Pro users get port forwarding on ports above 1024, useful for torrenting and self-hosted services — a feature several other reviewed providers don’t offer at all.
Servers & Torrenting
Windscribe runs servers across 69 countries and 120 cities on paid plans (11 countries on the free tier). P2P/torrenting traffic is allowed on most but not all locations — it’s blocked where illegal or heavily restricted — and isn’t available on the free tier at all.
Jurisdiction
Windscribe was founded in 2016 and is based in Toronto, Canada — a Five Eyes intelligence-sharing member, the tightest of the Five/Nine/Fourteen Eyes tiers. Canada’s proposed Bill C-22 (introduced March 2026) would mandate 12 months of connection-data retention if passed; Windscribe has publicly stated it would leave the Canadian market rather than comply, alongside similar statements from other privacy-focused companies.
