| Who holds the keys | Depends on a settingShow detailsHide detailsBy default Apple keeps the keys to iCloud Drive in its data centers and can decrypt your files, for example to restore them after a forgotten password. Advanced Data Protection, a setting turned on from an iPhone, iPad or Mac, deletes Apple's copy of the keys and leaves them on your trusted devices; Apple no longer offers it to new users in the UK. Even with it on, the file type, size, creation and modification dates and checksums of the file content and file name stay under keys Apple holds. With the setting on, iCloud.com cannot open your files until you allow web access, and then each session gets temporary keys from one of your devices. | You hold the keysShow detailsHide detailsMEGA says files are encrypted on your device with a random key per file, and file names, folder names and thumbnails are encrypted too. File sizes, the folder structure and the order of file versions stay readable to MEGA. The web version loads its encryption code from MEGA's servers on every visit, unless you use MEGA's extension for Chrome or Edge. |

| Jurisdiction | United StatesShow detailsHide detailsUsers in the US contract with Apple Inc. in Cupertino, California; users elsewhere contract with a regional Apple company, such as Apple Distribution International in Ireland. The terms are governed by California law, except for residents of the EU, the UK, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland, whose local law applies. Apple keeps the keys it can use in its US data centers and may store data with third-party data centers. In mainland China, iCloud is operated by GCBD (AIPO Cloud (Guizhou) Technology Co. Ltd) under its own terms. | HungaryShow detailsHide detailsSince May 2025 the contract for MEGA's cloud service has been with MEGA Privacy Kft, registered in Csomád, Hungary, under Hungarian law; subscriptions bought in the Apple and Google app stores are with MEGA Networks LLC (Delaware, USA), also under Hungarian law. Until then the operator was in New Zealand. Personal data is stored in Japan, Canada and the EU; MEGA says none is stored in the USA. |
| Owner | Apple Inc. | Independent companyShow detailsHide detailsMEGA's website does not name its shareholders. It was founded in New Zealand in 2013 and restructured in March 2025, when a Hungarian company became the provider of the cloud service; offices are in Hungary (head office), New Zealand and Spain. |

| File versions | LimitedShow detailsHide detailsDeleted files stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days and can be restored. Pages, Numbers and Keynote documents keep a version history; Apple documents no version history for other files. | ExtendedShow detailsHide detailsUp to 100 versions of each file, with no time limit; past 100, MEGA removes versions in between but keeps the oldest and newest. Rewind restores deleted files and folders to a past date: 30 days on the free plan (view only), up to 60 days on paid plans. |
